Bring Your Kids to Campus Day is on April 20th, 2018

The following is a list of activities offered on BYKTC 2018. Each activity has a recommended age range so that you can get a better understanding of which activities are most appropriate for your child(ren). We realize that there are not a lot of activities geared towards infants or young toddlers, but we hope that you will still be able to enjoy campus with them. For a printable version click here.

 

Face Painting: 9-11:30am Registration Table (SEC Plaza)   

Recommended Ages: All 

The Theater Department will be offering free face painting for kids at the Bring Your Kids to Campus Day registration table, so make sure to stop by! 

 

Disability Access Service Disney Trivia: 9am-1pm Registration Table (SEC Plaza)   

Recommended Ages: All 

Did you know that some of your favorite Disney characters have disabilities? Test your knowledge with OSU's Disability Access Services and learn which character has which disability. 

 

Open Crafts at Bates!: 9-9:45am Bates Hall 115   

Recommended Ages: 3-10 year olds
This will be an open crafting station. Materials will include colorful paper, markers, paint, glue, sequins, and other crafting supplies. Come and share your artistic skills and creativity!

 

Bowling: Drop in 9am-5pm MU Basement 
Recommended Ages: All 

The MU Basement will allow 1 free game of bowling for each child and free shoe rentals. Parents will have to pay to bowl and rent shoes. They also have video games, billiards, darts and other fun activities (prices vary) for families to play.

 

Family Break Time at the Heart of Campus: Drop in 9am-5pm MU Journey & Talisman
Recommended Ages: All 

The MU is the heart and living room of campus. Students visit our building to find food, friends, recreation and relaxation. We invite you and your family to come and enjoy the same experience. We will offer fun activities, food/beverage specials and two spaces for families to relax, take a break and eat breakfast or lunch. Journey will have cartoons on the big screen, paper covered tables for coloring and board games. Talisman will offer a smaller space with soft seating for those who need some quiet time.

 

NEW! OSU Football Practice: Drop in 9:20am-11:30am Prothro Fields (next to the Truax indoor facility)
Recommended Ages: All 

The OSU Football team will be opening their practice for OSU families to come and watch! Check-in at the front gate and get an up-close and personal view of our football team.

 

Sing Along & Story Time: Drop in 10-11am Hallie E Ford 1st Floor Lobby   

Recommended Ages: Infant-6 year olds
Please join us for an interactive and engaging sing along and story time session! We will use music, movement, and reading to engage young children and to model a few fun ideas for parents to try at home. 

 

Yoga & Mindfulness for Kids: Drop in 10-11am MU Family Lounge 
Recommended Ages: 4-12 year old  Through the use of storytelling, yoga postures will open our experiential program for children ages 4 to 12. After we try out some yoga postures we will then practice simple focused breathing meditations that can help children with concentration, focus and quieting the mind. There will also be opportunities to color and draw at the program. Wear comfortable clothing!

 

Name that Mystery Fruit or Veggie!: Drop in 10am-12pm Linus Pauling Science Center 402 
Recommended Ages: 5-15 year olds

Kids will use their detective skills like sense of touch and smell to play a game where they identify mystery fruits and veggies from their local school gardens. Parents can plan to pick up information on and learn more about spring and summer cooking and garden programs!

 

Journey the Globe: Drop in 10am-1pm ILLC Lobby 
Recommended Ages: Infant-10 year olds
Take your kids on a journey around the world with OSU’s International Programs! Little explorers will have the opportunity to color a passport and visit some exciting destinations in which to interact and explore.

 

Write Your Own Book! 10am-5pm Valley Library- Under Grad Research & Writing Studio Recommended Ages: All 

Come visit us any time during Bring Your Kids to Campus Day and create your own book by writing a story and/or coloring pictures.

 

Fun in the Orange Media Network Studio: Drop in 11am-3pm SEC 4th floor 
Recommended Ages: All 

Come see us at Orange Media Network on the fourth floor of the Student Experience Center. We will be offering 3D movies, a photo-booth, a chance to be a weather anchor, broadcast live on the radio, and coloring activities. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times, please no food or drink.

 

Arts & Crafts: Drop in 11am-1pm Craft Center (SEC Basement) 
Recommended Ages: All 

Visit the craft center and choose one of the many arts and crafts they will be offering during Bring Your Kids to Campus Day!

 

National Guard Climbing Wall: Drop in 11am-1pm MU Brick Mall (Near Registration Table) 
Recommended Ages: All- Must be over 30 pounds to climb 

The National Guard will be rolling onto campus with a giant, three lane climbing wall for you and your family to enjoy!

 

ASOSU Refreshments & Recreation: Drop in 11am-4pm MU 109 
Recommended Ages: All 

ASOSU and SafeRide will be teaming up with the Children, Youth, and Family Committee to provide refreshments, resources, and recreation. Stop by for cookie decorating, button making, snacks, and more from 11-4!

 

Make Your Own MU ID: Drop in 11am-3pm MU Journey Room
 
Recommended Ages: All 

Come have your photo taken (perhaps go grab a bite to eat or visit our Family Break Time Are) and then pick up your MU ID after a short assembly time.
 

Craft N Care Projects & Diaper Drive: 12-3pm SEC Involvement Lounge (112)   

Recommended Ages: 3 years and above
A great way to introduce your child to community service. The Center for Civic Engagement will have crafts set up for your child to do and then to donate to a local charity. PLEASE NOTE: Your child will not be bringing home to craft.  Bring diaper's to drop off to support the Family Tree Relief Nursery.  

 

Robotics Demo: 12pm, 12:40pm & 1:20pm (Choose one of 3 tour times)
Recommended Ages:
5 years and above Oregon State University's graduate Robotics Program is one of the top-ranked in the United States. Come over to Graf Hall and see what we're up to on the cutting edge of robotics. PLEASE NOTE: you will need to show up at one of the 3 listed times (12, 12:40, or 1:20pm) to gain entrance, this is not drop in.

 

OSU Magical History Tour: Bus leaves at 1pm from Student Experience Center front entrance 
Recommended Ages: 4-10 years old

Join us for a Magical History Tour and learn a bit about our wondrous campus history! Did you know maraschino cherries were further commercialized here at OSU? Did you know that in 1912 Lady MacDuff the Chicken revolutionized the poultry industry by laying over 300 eggs a year?! Our tour director, Joe Majeski, will inform and delight us as we grab a “passport,” board the bus, tour campus history and taste some foods along the way. We will be asking that you pay close attention to the recommended ages and you may be asked to wait if your child is under 3 years of age.

 

Academic Success Center Fun-ival: Drop in 1-4pm, Waldo Hall 120 

Recommended Ages: All

The Academic Success Center is thrilled to present its Fun-ival for OSU’s 2018 Bring Your Kids to Campus Day. There will be mask making! There will be glitter! There will be button-making and coloring/sending postcards (and more!) and all the fun will happen between 1 and 4 PM in Waldo 120. Come drop in and play with us!

 

Pitch Your Great Ideas to Assist with Increasing the Family Friendliness of OSU: Drop in 1-4pm, MU 109 
Recommended Ages: All 

The newly formed Children, Youth, and Family Committee wants to hear from you. Are you an OSU community member with ideas about how child care or eldercare could be improved at OSU? Stop by for some drinks and snacks. Bring your kids, or just yourself! There will be activities to occupy your children while you share your ideas and learn more about what family-based innovations are currently in the works.

 

Family Swim: Drop in 1:30-5pm Dixon Swimming Pool 
Recommended Ages: All 

Family Swim Rules:  

  • Must be accompanied by a participating adult (age 18 or older) at all times          
  • May only participate during Family Swim Hours       
  • If a child is not able to move in the water without feet touching the bottom or needs to wear a life-jacket, the child is considered a non-swimmer.
  • Only three “non-swimmers” per adult and the adult must be in the water within arm’s reach of the children.       
  • Only five “swimmers” per adult and the adult must be able to directly observe the children.
  • Babies are allowed in the pool with plastic swim diapers  

 

Family Climb & Play Time: Drop in 1:30-3:30pm McAlexander Fieldhouse   

Recommended Ages: 3 years and above
The McAlexander Fieldhouse will have the turf fields open for playing games. The climbing wall will be open to the first 40 families to arrive. You will be given a time to climb (either 1:30 or 2:30pm).

 

CBEE Club Engineering Demos: 2-4pm Kelley Engineering 1007   

Recommended Ages: 4-10 years

There will be 2 demonstrations:        

  • Gel Beads: Chemical Engineering Applications:Immerse yourself in the applications of chemical engineering with gel beads! Using chemistry applied to real life, see how chemical engineers clean up oil spills or improve medicine.      
  • Diaper Engineering for the Next Generation: Discover the innovation behind the modern diaper. Learn how chemical engineers and scientists came together to create the lightweight, absorbent diapers used today!

 

Gymnastics & Gym Games with KidSpirit: Drop in 2-4pm Langton 3rd floor 
Recommended Ages: 4 years and above
Have you always wanted to try out gymnastics? KidSpirit will be opening up their gymnastics room for families to come explore. Waiting to get into the gymnastics room? Grab a ball or join in on a game of tag and other games happening in the gym right outside the gymnastics room!

 

Great Books for Great Kids: 2-4pm Moreland Hall Lobby   

Recommended Ages: 3-9 year olds
This is a storytime session in which faculty in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film read aloud abridged/kid-focused versions of great works of literature.     

  • 5-9 year olds should come between 2-3pm
  • 3-6 year olds should come between 3-4pm

 

Let’s Play in the Library/¡Vamos a jugar en la biblioteca! 2:30-4:30pm The Valley Library Autzen Room (2082)   

Recommended Ages: 5 years and above
English and Spanish speakers alike will enjoy spending time at the Valley Library playing bilingual games, coloring, and crafting.

 

How to Write a Poem: 3-4pm Moreland Hall Room 204C   

Recommended Ages: 6-18 years

This is a session in which our poetry faculty and GTAs in the MFA in Creative Writing will lead kids through activities that allow them to write their first poem or to workshop their 100th poem. All ages welcome, from those who can barely write to advanced writers. We will have staff and activities to support all ages.

      3 - 4:30 p.m. Meet on the east side of Gilmore Hall
      Recommended Ages: 7 and up
      Is algae a better fertilizer or a biofuels feedstock? Watch researchers feed algae in the lab and convert agricultural waste into biofuels. Then, you'll head to the Gilmore annex and see researchers turn algae into bio-crude in a matter of minutes simulating natural processes that take millions of years to convert algae into petroleum. At Hong Liu's lab, you will see work on fuel cells that extract hydrogen power from bacteria that are digesting waste water.     • This free, lunch-hour concert series has been a tradition at Oregon State University since 1969. The concerts take place in the beautiful Memorial Union Lounge, most Fridays during fall, spring and winter term, beginning at 12 p.m. and lasting for approximately 45 minutes. They feature a variety of OSU music ensembles, faculty and student musicians, as well as regional, national and international guest artists.
